What is the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE?

This is another financial aid form that is required by some colleges and universities. Students are responsible for finding out which schools require it as well as the schools priority deadline for completing the form. Students can pick up a registration form in the main guidance office. There is a $5 registration fee and a fee of $18 for each school to which you want the application sent.

Where can I get an application for the state universities (SUNY)?

Students may pick up these applications in the main guidance office. Applications for some other schools may also be found in the guidance office. Students are responsible for obtaining applications that are not on file. This can be done by calling or e-mailing the schools.

Where can I get an application for the city universities (CUNY)?

The CUNY application process is now online: http://www1.cuny.edu/admissions/undergraduate/onlineapp-1.html

Are there any costs associated with transcript requests?

The first four transcripts that are sent with the completed college applications are free. Each transcript beyond that incurs a fee of $5.00 per transcript. Because transcripts are official school documents, they are not given to students or parents.

What do I need to know about recommendation letters?

All students should plan on asking two teachers in their academic subjects such as English, History, Science, Math, or Foreign Language for letters of recommendation. The teachers can be from the current year, as well as teachers from years past. Also, each student's guidance counselor will write the student a letter of recommendation. Students should allow teachers and counselors ample time to write these letters. They should also provide the recommendation writer with a brag sheet or resume to assist the writer in developing the best recommendation possible.

Where can I find assistance on college essays?

Students should take special care in writing their college essays, taking advantage of the numerous books and resources in the guidance office that provide assistance in writing such essays. Students should also allow someone such as their guidance counselor or English teacher to read the essay. Finalized essays must be handed in as part of a completed college application.

When should I go on a college visit?

Over the summer, October 15, November 7, and all school vacations are the designated days for seniors to visit prospective colleges. Students can call or e-mail the schools that they wish to visit at least two weeks before they wish to visit. Many colleges will also allow students to sit in on classes for the day and sometimes provide overnight accommodations on campus.

Will any colleges send representatives to our school?

Different college representatives regularly visit the school during both lunch periods to speak with students. The name of the visiting school is announced each morning. They are seated by the front desk on the first floor.
