Top Ten in National Vocabulary Competition in NYS

Sr. Mary Beth Read, OSU principal of the Academy of Mount St. Ursula announced that Danielle Flores '09 placed in the top ten in New York City in the National Vocabulary Championship. 13,000 students participated in the school wide phase of the competition. Representing Mount St. Ursula on December 10th, Danielle competed against 100 other finalists at the Bayard Rustin Education Complex in Manhattan.

At the Citywide Championships, Danielle was a "Heat Winner" in the first round of the competition. The first round consisted of 10 heats of 10 qualifiers. Each heat produced 1 "heat winner" that advanced to the second round of the competition. The first round consisted of 10 multiple choice questions and the player with the most correct answers advanced to round two. Danielle won her heat in the sudden death round.

In round two, the ten heat winners competed for a spot in the final round. Danielle answered two questions correctly, falling just short and ending her journey in the National Vocabulary Championships.

"Being in the citywide championship was both an exhilarating and enlightening experience. Spending time with people of wide vocabularies showed me I have so much more to learn about the English language. Competing with them was as intense as being in the playoffs!" stated Danielle.
